Following the success of 3 Idiots (2009), Rajkumar Hirani and Abhijat Joshi began working on their next script. However, after noticing similarities with the plot of Inception (2010), they decided to discard the original idea. The story was later reimagined with a fresh perspective and tone. During its development, the film went through several working titles, including Talli and Ek Tha Talli, before finally being named PK, as the previous title was considered too similar to Ek Tha Tiger (2012). The film’s music was composed by Shantanu Moitra, Ajay–Atul, and Ankit Tiwari, with lyrics by Swanand Kirkire, Amitabh Varma, and Manoj Muntashir. UTV Motion Pictures secured the distribution rights, and PK became the first Bollywood film to be shot in Belgium.
